Our story
Mokoko is a designer goods studio with sustainability in the core of everything we do.
We make leather goods with focus on clever details and inventive constructions, while producing as little waste as possible during the process. We take great pride in finishing all ends of the seams by hand which adds durability for years to come.
All items are made in our studio in Tallinn, treasuring our employees by providing them flexible working conditions and fair pay. Producing everything transparently in-house and keeping skills of leathercraft alive, has been our core value since the beginning.
Over the years we have sold our products all over the world through our web store and through various resellers in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, South-Korea. In the spring of 2018 we opened our first store in Telliskivi Creative City in Tallinn, which was a great location and experience but in a larger picture very wasteful in terms of energy consumption related to how essential our products are for the basic needs of people in general. In 2023 we moved everything back in our studio in ARS Art Factory and decided to focus on production on demand and be available through online channels, selected design markets and resellers.
The Materials
We use high quality Italian vegetable tanned leather that matures while ageing, developing a unique patina over time and with proper care remains resistant even after decades of usage. For more information please visit our blog.
Vegetable tanning is an artisan tradition passed down and perfected through centuries. The process contains neither artificial nor toxic substances. All leathers we use are certified by The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Consortium (LINK http://www.pellealvegetale.it/en/) that brings together 22 tanneries operating in Tuscany. The certificate guarantees highest quality and transparent production process.
The metal components, threads and adhesive we use on some of our products come mainly from Italy, linen textile used for lining is made in Belarus.
The Designer
The head and heart behind Mokoko is accessories designer Mari Maripuu.
Mari has graduated from Estonian Academy of Arts in Leather Art, Bookbinding and Accessories Design BA in 2013 and continued her studies in Product Design MA with academic interest in Systemic Design. She has furthered her education in Sustainable Fashion Summer School in Copenhagen in 2011 and in 2011-2012 as an Erasmus student in HAMK University of Applied Sciences in Footwear Design in Finland.
The Company
Mokoko Labs OÜ is a family business founded by Mari Maripuu and Mihkel Sokk in 2013 as an experiment - is it possible to create a sustainable fashion brand with in-house production and bootstrap financially.
It can be done and we feel a bit proud that we have inspired other Estonian handmade businesses over the years to choose the same path - because overall the idea is to make the world a better place.
